Hey folks,

We’re looking to fill a few positions here at The Phoblographer in the coming year. We’re looking to expand our reviews team, our news team, and our arts teams. 2021 is looking very bright for us. We’re looking for folks here in America and abroad, and we’d love to have you aboard. Head on past the jump to see the positions and details.

Photo Editor (International and American Applications Accepted)

The Phoblographer is looking to fill a brand new position: the Photo Editor. This applicant will work with the team and various folks throughout the photography space to create articles the audience loves. This applicant will not only understand the artistic side of photography but also be well versed in the tech side. We also think that critiques are important.

Requirements

– Must be proficient with WordPress. We use the new Gutenberg interface. This is an absolute must-have requirement and we cannot work with someone who hasn’t used the platform before.

– Strong command of the English language; the American dialect and spelling is a plus. However, we have a pretty large international audience, and mixing in the British flavor every now and again is alright.

– Previous related blog writing experience. Includes skills for interviewing, communications, formatting, transcribing, etc.

– Knowledge of copyright laws as they pertain to using images, etc.

– Must have artistic photography knowledge and be able to demonstrate it. Ideally, the work you do will be captivating enough to rake in loads of pageviews and do justice that we’ve done to photographers for years. Think you can do this?

– Familiarity with various Google Suite apps and Trello will put you ahead quite a bit.

– The proposed output is two pieces a week. Usually, these are interviews and require formatting. This is a freelance job. No one on staff needs to work more than 8 to 12 hours a week. Mental health is very important to us. This used to be a mainstay on the Phoblographer, and at one point artist interviews used to be our biggest source of traffic. We’re looking to bring even more artistic magic back to the photography world. Specifically, we’re looking to remind people that photography is an art.

– Must be able to meet weekly deadlines. We are flexible and accommodating within reason. The site has a pretty high emphasis on working together and helping each other out.

– Must work well with a team and be able to take guidance (sometimes constructive criticism) well. Both the Editor in Chief and the Copy Editor provide help where needed.

– The Phoblographer champions its ethics and has since day one. We refuse to work with Unsplash and believe that creators should be compensated ethically. And we’re also looking for someone with high moral and ethical standards.

– You’ll have a trial period of three months.

– Monetary payments done through PayPal, QuickPay, Venmo, Bank Transfer, or check. The Phoblographer is well known for fair and honest compensation amongst the photography blogging world.

– We have a very serious non-compete policy pertaining to certain other sites.

– Your location does not matter; our current staffers are in Asia, Europe, and America.

How to Apply

Skip the resume and send an awesome cover letter to chrisgampat@thephoblographer.com citing all the best stuff you’ve done, talking about the qualifications you meet, along with three writing samples demonstrating that you can do the type of work we’re looking for. Links to your website, portfolio, and writing samples should be included.

Be sure to make the subject line say your name and the position you’re going for. For example: Chris Gampat: News/Culture Writer Position.

After your application is received, it will be reviewed by me. Good luck to all applicants!

Reviews Writers (Hiring Only Within the US with No Exceptions)

The Phoblographer requires new Reviews Writers. Ideally you’ll be reviewing things from cameras, lenses, filters, lights, camera bags, computers, phones, etc. I’m looking for the best candidate, and that ultimately comes first as the site has to maintain its integrity. My goal is to build as diverse a team as possible. Most important to this position is lots of experience and photography knowledge.

Further, it’s mandatory that you can handhold a camera exposure to at least one second and create a shot without camera shake. No newbies here, we’re really not playing around for these positions. Our ideal candidate will be a great team player and also follow these guidelines. FYI, this is a part-time position.

Requirements

– Must be proficient with WordPress. This is absolutely mandatory. Other apps that we use are Trello, Gmail for work, and Grammarly. We use the Gutenberg version of WordPress.

– Strong command of the English language; the American dialect and spelling are mandatory. Being able to create enticing leads and headlines will really convince us.

– Previous camera, lens, camera bag, lighting, and/or computer review writing experience. I need to see writing samples.

– The Phoblographer champions its ethics and has since day one. We refuse to work with Unsplash and believe that creators should be compensated ethically. And we’re also looking for someone with high moral and ethical standards.

– Must have industry technical knowledge. We’re talking about more than just apertures and shutter speeds. You also need a working knowledge of lighting, posing, filters, etc. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate it too.

– Review output varies. But in an ideal world, I’d say one or two a week. I’m taking a more significant step forward back into reviews. Reviews are between 750 and 2500 words typically. This is a freelance job. No one on staff (except for me) needs to work more than 8 to 12 hours a week. Mental health is vital to us. If you’re working longer than that, then you’re doing something very wrong. We’ve had people waste a lot of time before unnecessarily, and we’re not looking for that. The site treats its workers very well, and we expect the same in return.

– Must be able to meet deadlines and have open communication. If you’re going to be late on pieces, just know that you’re going to throw off an entire process. You should do the basic courtesy of letting me know. I’m not a monster. I just believe in fairness.

– Must work well with a team and be able to take the guidance (sometimes constructive criticism) well

– You’ll have a trial period of three months.

– Monetary payments are made through PayPal, QuickPay, Venmo, Bank Transfer or check. Everyone is paid on average, no more than 24 hours after submitting an invoice. The Phoblographer is well known for fair and honest compensation amongst the photography blogging world.

– We have a very serious non-compete policy.

– You must be based in the US. That’s mandatory
